14th November – World Diabetes Day

Yesterday, the 14th of November, was the World Diabetes Day, celebrated on the day of the birthday of Sir Frederick Banting, who co-discovered insulin along with Charles Best in 1922. This day has been commemorated since 1991, in response to growing concerns about the escalating health threat posed by diabetes.

  • 1 in 11 adults were living with diabetes in 2019
  • The number of people living with diabetes is expected to rise to 578 million by 2030
  • 1 in 2 adults with diabetes remain undiagnosed (232 million)
  • Diabetes caused 4.2 million deaths in 2019

The World Health Organization reminded us yesterday that some of the problems that untreated diabetes can lead to are:

  • heart attack
  • stroke
  • blindness
  • kidney failure
  • lower limb amputation

An early diagnosis and treatment are key to preventing such complications.
For this reason, and due to the association between type 1 diabetes mellitus and HLA-DQ genes, BDR-Blackhills Diagnostic Resources offers you the Genvinset HLA Diabetes Mellitus Type 1 kit.
